The Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka and state Congress leader, DK Shivakumar, publicly apologized on Tuesday for singing the anthem of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) during a session in the state Assembly, as reported by a local news outlet.
Shivakumar expressed regret, stating, “If anyone has been hurt, I feel sorry… I would like to seek an apology from all of them.” He explained that his intention was to mock R Ashoka, the Leader of Opposition from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The RSS serves as the ideological parent organization of the ruling BJP.
During his remarks, Shivakumar reaffirmed his unwavering loyalty to the Congress party and the Gandhi family, declaring, “I am a born Congressman, I will die as one,” according to reports.
His recitation of the RSS anthem, Namaste Sada Vatsale Matrubhoome, occurred amidst discussions regarding a stampede incident outside Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium in June, where he aimed to respond to the BJP's comments.
While BJP members appeared to support Shivakumar's actions, Congress members chose to remain silent.
He later clarified that his intention was not to endorse the RSS by singing its anthem, stating, “Some of my friends are taking a political leap, trying to misuse it and cause confusion among the public.” He reiterated his apology for any offense caused.
Shivakumar's apology followed comments from Congress MLC BK Hariprasad, who questioned whether the Deputy Chief Minister was attempting to curry favor by singing an anthem linked to an organization that has faced bans in independent India. Hariprasad noted that while there would be no issue with Shivakumar reciting the anthem in his official capacity, he would need to apologize if it was done as Congress president.
Home Minister G Parameshwara indicated that the party's leadership would decide on the matter if they deemed Shivakumar's actions inappropriate.
